“It would have been a remarkable voyage if it was carried out by no matter how experienced a yachtsman. But Middleton was nothing of the sort.” Arthur Ransome
With no GPS, flares, lifejacket or radio, with just canvas, some meagre provisions and a set of oars, this is the incredible adventure of Empson Edward Middleton, the first person to circumnavigate England single-handedly. Follow this English eccentric’s amazing journey from his departure from the Thames in a 23 foot iron-keeled yawl, on a course in which he purposefully made for the strongest tides, in a single-handed clockwise trip around the UK completed in 1869.
Sailing enthusiasts and lovers of the English coast will find many a familiar port on the way, as determined to make harbour, sup and sleep on dry land, Middleton takes on some of the hardest challenges in the most difficult inshore seas in his beloved vessel The Kate, modelled on the famous Rob Roy. Often sailing for days at a stretch, and in the occasional lulls switching to the oars, he performs “astonishing feats of indomitable rowing” with the tenacity of a Yorkshire infantry man.
In between mouthfuls of Cornish bread and swigs of sherry, the sailor regales us with his peculiar observations on the world around him, including his bizarre remedies for his medical complaints.
At times hilarious, at times awe-inspiring, the exploits of this amateur sea dog are as gripping today as they were all those years ago. Included are some twenty original contemporary engravings and illustrations that seascapes, ports, diagrams of boats, and maps, alongside over twenty-five footnotes explaining nautical terms and other details. A super book for anyone who loves sailing, the British Isles and good humour.
E.E. Middleton was born in 1838 to the Advocate General of Jamaica. An infantryman, translator of Virgil, extraordinarily brave sailor and all-round screw loose, he died in 1916.

The Cruise of the Kate Thrilling Solo Voyages Book 1 eBook E E Middleton Erik Empson Reviews
What a voyage, what an adventure! This is seafaring at its roughest and rawest, a classic title for all lovers of the sea. Lovely kindle edition
I am not particularly into sailing but that did not stop me from enjoying this book immensely. The author is a real card, with delusions of grandeur and a very funny take on life. Still, his voyage was an amazing physical feat and remains so. Lots of helpful illustrations in this kindle edition of the many ports of call.
